Q: Tell me a little bit about your life growing up as a child?
A: My natural birth parents were Indian and Chinese. I was born in Singapore and was adopted by Indian parents. I grew up in Sydney Australia and came from a family of medical professionals; my mother is a psychotherapist; my father is a psychiatrist and my grandfather and great grandfather were doctors. Even my sister has a medical background as a professor of psychology. I choose design over medicine and my family has always supported my choice.
Q: Were you always interested in the arts?
A: At a very early age my mother noticed I had a passion for drawing; she gave me large stacks of paper and crayons. My parents believed a cultural education was just as important as an academic education. My sister and I frequented the ballet, opera, art exhibitions and music recitals. I would often draw what I saw or felt from those experiences and I think that was a catalyst for my creative path that followed.
Q: What sparked your interest in fashion?
A: As I grew-up, I started drawing dress designs for my mother and sister. They liked them so much my mother would bring my designs to the salon and have the dressmaker make them for her.
Q: Where did you attend school for fashion design?
A: I attended school at St. Martin School of Art & Design in London England. The school selects twenty-four students a year from all around the world to enter the program. I was one of the students chosen and graduated with my Fashion MA.
Q: How did you get started in the fashion business?
A: I needed to earn money and decided to sell my student collection at a local flea market. My collection sold quite quickly and this inspired me to continue selling clothes for extra money. It was there that I was discovered by fashion stylists and style editors. I was featured in Vogue, Elle and Cosmopolitan. Not long after, I was approached by retailers who were interested in selling my collections.
Q: When did you decide you wanted to design wedding gowns?
A: It was purely accidental. I designed a collection of white evening gowns that many brides purchased for their wedding day. It wasn’t until then that I was inspired by the brides to create my vision of bridal gowns. So I guess it was the brides who found and inspired me.
Q: Where did you first start working in the wedding industry and how did this experience help you as a designer?
A: I began working in the bridal industry in the late 90’s. It was a time when there was a lot of diversity in customs and traditions especially when it came to bridal.
Q: What type of bride wears your wedding gowns?
A: A cosmopolitan, independent, romantic, sophisticated and of course sexy chic bride wears a Reva Mivasagar bridal gown. A bride who has a runway image because she has a sense of fashion is intelligent and well traveled.
Q: What are your favorite fabrics to work with?
A: Sheer silks, organza, chiffon, tulle and georgettes. The materials I like give the feel of being diaphanous, romantic ethereal yet are bold enough to make a statement…just like my brides.
Q: Do you have a signature style you are known for?
A: A signature style that I am known for is a soft and fluid bias cut gown that sexily hugs the shape of the feminine form. It is the kind of gown that encompasses all the attributes of a Reva Mivasagar bride; chic, modern, romantic and sexy.
Q: Accessories are so important for the finishing touches to your bridal ensemble; what accessories do you recommend for your brides?
A: For accessories that complement a Reva Mivasagar gown I recommend beautiful earrings and a veil that frames and flatters the shape of your face.
